There are mermaids in the Hudson. Well, mermaid, at any rate — I met her years ago, and only the once, at that. She wasn’t visiting; it was her home. She knew the currents, the inhalation and exhalation of salt.

I am searching for poetry

That I am horribly, horribly afraid that I will have to write it.
I say it casually, teasingly—

oh, my goodness, what an awful fate, writing poetry for you.
